Start Sustainable Initiative

Here at “The Balcony Gardener” we are active advocates for growing your own and promoting sustainable living, starting at home. We don’t think that you need to have a large stretch of green land to do this and that city-dwellers shouldn’t feel limited by their often small outdoor spaces; there are plenty of interesting opportunities to explore growing.

Prince Charles is championing the urban gardener, he has launched “Start Day” taking place on Sunday 31st; a collection of three events urging people to look into sustainable living wherever they may reside. Prince Charles has opened the gardens of his London residence Clarence House to the public for free, visitors can explore the gardens and the horicultural designs. There will be the opportunity to explore different ideas on the future of growing and gardening with exhibitions from the Soil Association, National Trust and the Highgrove shop.

Alongside the open gardens, there will be an eco-rally culminating with the finishing line on the Mall; celebrities will drive a variety of alternative vehicles from electric to hybrid and bio-fuel. There will be further zero emission city vehicles and bikes joining the eco-rally. Finally the sustainable pop-up restaurant “Think, Eat, Drink” will be open for five days and will be demonstrating simple and easy ways to eat and live more sustainably using British sourced food and drink. The series of events will arm the visitor with ideas and inspirations to turn your roof into a garden, growing your own produce and how to live more sustainably.
